This guide explains how to change the password for a local account on a Windows device. You will need to know your current password to complete this process. If you have forgotten your password, follow the recovery steps outlined later in this document.
Before You Begin
These steps apply to local Windows accounts, not Microsoft accounts.
Ensure you are signed in to the device.
If you are using a work or managed device, some options may be restricted by organisational policy.
Change Your Local Account Password
Follow the steps below to change your password using the Windows Settings app.
Step 1: Open Sign-in Options

Choose Sign-in options.
You can also open this screen directly by using the Sign-in options shortcut.
Step 2: Change Your Password
Under Ways to sign in, locate Password.

When prompted, enter your current (old) password.
Select Next.
Step 3: Create a New Password
Enter your new password.
Re-enter the new password to confirm it.

Select your local account if prompted.
Step 2: Verify Your Identity
Answer the security questions you set up when the account was created.
Ensure the answers match exactly, including spelling.

Confirm the new password.
Select Next to complete the process.
You can now sign in using your new password.
Password Best Practices
When creating a new password, follow these recommendations:
Use at least 12 characters.
Include a mix of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols.
Avoid using personal information such as your name or date of birth.
Do not reuse passwords from other accounts.
